A comfortable Texas-style steakhouse featuring charbroiled beef steaks, roasted prime rib, buffalo burgers, chicken, lobster, shrimp, lamb, quail, and pork.

This award-winning steakhouse, with a fun and friendly atmosphere, is housed in a beautifully restored historic cotton gin that will interest history buffs and novices alike.

Baskets of peanuts are served to every table. Messes are encouraged, so just toss the shells on the floor! There is a full service bar and dinner entrees range from $8-$18. Dress is casual, or glittery, or Texas chic, San Marcos style. Texas Red's is a favorite of area ranchers who know what a good steak is supposed to taste like.  During the fall and winter, the bar features a crackling fireplace.

Texas Reds originally opened in Red River, NM in 1967 by Texan siblings, Bill Gill, Martha Gill Stephens, and John Gill.  Over time, it evolved from being a small burger joint to a steakhouse, where people traveled from miles, even states away, just to eat one of Texas Reds famous steaks.  Bill Gill and his wife Annette had four children, all of whom grew up working at the restaurant.

In 1991, Billís daughter and her husband moved to San Marcos to continue the Texas Reds legacy.  Since then, Troy and Nancigail Miller have been serving San Marcos great steaks where their core principles consist of presenting quality, consistency, and value to their guests from everything from the preparation of food to providing great service in a unique atmosphere.  Texas Reds prides itself on being a third generation, locally-owned family business where Troy and Nancigailís daughters continue contributing their services just as other family members have done for over 38 years.

In November of 2004, a devastating fire destroyed the original steakhouse in Red River.  Even though the loss was great, Troy and Nancigail are committed to moving forward from the tragedy and serving San Marcos (as well as the surrounding communities) with the same enthusiasm that they had when they first opened Texas Reds in San Marcos, and also with the same passion that Bill Gill had when he first started Texas Reds in 1967.  Bill reopened a smaller version of his original steakhouse on May 14th, 2005.  Now, his legacy will live on in Red River.  His son, Rik, opened another smaller version of the restaurant in Eagle Nest, NM. There are now three Texas Reds REAL Steakhouses to carry on our family tradition of great steaks!
